Immaculate Heart Central coach Kurt Robbins was in a bind and needed a starting goalkeeper, so he sought out McElheran, who was then a field player.He’s sure glad he did, as McElheran, now a senior, over the years has established herself as one of the top goalies in the Frontier League, if not in Section 3.“When we said we didn’t have a goaltender, she raised her hand and said she would play goalie, and she never played there before in her life,” Robbins said. “So I have all the respect in the world for her.”“So in the seventh and eighth grade I played in the field,” McElheran said. “And before my ninth-grade year, our goalie graduated, so we didn’t have a goalie. So he (Robbins) was kind of like ‘hey do you want to try the goal?’ and I was like ‘sure, the team needs it.”The versatile McElheran, who previous played in the midfield before her freshman season, is entering her sixth year of varsity play,“I wasn’t too sure, because I used to play it in the past when I was younger, but I had always played on the field,” she said. “And it was kind of a new position for me, but I was willing to take it on and I accepted the challenge. And I was like ‘I can do this’ and I put a ton of work into it to get to where I am.”Last year, McElheran helped lead the Cavaliers to an 18-1 record, including an undefeated league campaign, and another run in the Section 3 playoffs.McElheran, who started every game, recorded 11 shutouts posting a .922 save percentage. “I definitely feel like I’ve improved a ton from where I started,” she said. “I feel more confident and my team feels the same way. I have confidence, so my defense has confidence, too. Because I know when I was younger, I wasn’t as vocal and wasn’t as confident ... Friends and colleagues described Dr. Veeder as deeply committed to social justice, but with a strong belief that social work should be guided by a rational approach to implementation and review of results.This clear-eyed outlook was evident in her 1999 book, Marketing Human Services: Selling Your Services Under Managed Care, which she called a “desktop reference” for applying marketing practices like fundraising, target-segmenting and focus groups to the social work profession.In an interview with the Boston College Chronicle, Dr. Veeder explained that social workers and other human services professionals tended to be reluctant in adopting for-profit management practices or even to consider their vocation in such a context – attitudes she said were counter-productive in the managed care environment.“For better or worse, human services has become a business,” said Dr. Veeder, who held an MBA from the Carroll School of Management. “What I’m saying is, let’s beat the suits at their own game and do good for our clients.”One of her major accomplishments was an extensive intergenerational study of 100 Northern Irish women to analyze how women make decisions in society and their personal lives.
